Hawaii Women Lawyers is pleased to announce the third brown bag in the “So You Want to be a Judge” series.  Please join Judge Kirstin Hamman, Judge Clarissa Malinao and Judge Trish Morikawa for a discussion about the judicial duties and responsibilities of Circuit Court Judges and the judicial selection process.

Second Circuit Court Judge Kirstin Hamman

Judge Hamman has served as a Judge of the Second Circuit since 2014, first as a Per Diem District Court Judge, then confirmed as a full-time District Court Judge in 2018, and in 2021, sworn in as Judge of the Circuit Court of the Second Circuit.  Prior to her appointment, Judge Hamman specialized in family law and special education law.  She was also an attorney with the Maui Office of Council Services, the State Office of the Public Defender, and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii; and a law clerk to Judge Boyd Mossman and the Hawaii Civil Right Commission.  Judge Hamman is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law. 

First Circuit Court Judge Clarissa Malinao

In 2021, Judge Malinao was appointed as Judge of the Circuit Court of the First Circuit. Prior to her appointment, Judge Malinao served as a Per Diem District Court Judge; as a solo practitioner, she focused on criminal law in both state and federal courts; and she was a Deputy Public Defender with the State Office of the Public Defender.  Judge Malinao was recognized as an Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney Honoree for her volunteer work with Volunteer Legal Services of Hawaii. She received her law degree from Whittier Law School in California.

First Circuit Court Judge Trish Morikawa

Judge Morikawa was appointed as Judge of the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in 2019. Prior to her appointment as a Judge of the Circuit Court, she served as a District Court Judge and a Per Diem Judge of the District Family Court.  Judge Morikawa’s prior experience includes working as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, a Deputy Attorney General, and a litigation attorney in private practice.  She was also the County Housing Coordinator for the City & County of Honolulu and was a volunteer Commissioner for the Department of Hawaiian Homelands.  Judge Morikawa is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law.
