Lady Lawyers Luncheon:

Inside Counsel Perspective

Monday, July 20, 2015 at Noon

Offices of Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing, ASB Tower, 1001 Bishop Street, 20th Floor conference room

Sponsored by Hawaii Women Lawyers and Hawaii State Bar Association

Please join us on Monday, July 20 from Noon to 1:15 p.m. for a discussion about potential differences when working with clients as inside versus outside counsel and how to ensure a productive relationship between inside and outside counsel, led by Janet Kloenhamer, Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Hawaii Pacific University and Erika Strawn, Senior Assistant General Counsel at The Howard Hughes Corporation.

The discussion will include answers to the following questions:  (i) Does being inside or outside counsel change the way you represent or interact with your client?  (ii) As inside counsel, when do you or should go to outside counsel?  (iii) As outside counsel, how can you be most effective for your client when your client has inside counsel and when your client does not?

  • Janet Kloenhamer is the Executive Vice President for Administration and General Counsel for Hawaii Pacific University, where she is responsible for non-academic operations including legal, compliance, human resources, and facilities needs of the University.  Prior to that, she was President of Allianz of America Resolution Services, an organization responsible for reducing liabilities on lines of unprofitable and non-core insurance business for Fireman's Fund and Allianz Life, and Senior Vice President, Corporate Secretary, and General Counsel at Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, both in Novato, California.  She has also served as Chair of the Fireman's Fund Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Erika Strawn is Senior Assistant General Counsel for The Howard Hughes Corporation, where she oversees all legal matters related to the development of the master planned, mixed-use community of Ward Village as well as the existing retail operations.  She was previously Regional Counsel for The Home Depot, based in Orange, California, where she was responsible for a broad array of real estate and regulatory compliance matters for all of the Western United States, along with Texas, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Prior to that, she was in private practice at Winston and Strawn's Washington D.C. office, where she helped to launch the real estate practice, and at Richards, Watson and Gerson in Los Angeles, California.

Invite a friend or colleague - the more, the merrier!   Bring a bag lunch or snack; beverages will be provided.  And bring some of your business cards for networking, to help introduce yourself to others.  Members of Hawaii Women Lawyers who attend are eligible to enter a drawing for 2 free movie tickets!
