Please join us for lunch on Thursday, January 30 to discuss LGBT Equality:  Where do we go from here? with speaker Ellen Godbey Carson, recipient of various civil rights awards and honors.

Equal marriage rights for same gender couples are now the law in Hawai`i and several other States. Some States, like Hawai`i, are also pursuing LGBT equality in other arenas.  But what legal and societal impediments continue to be experienced by our gay, lesbian and transgender community?  What are the rights and limits under Hawai`i's new marriage equality law? LGBT equality issues, similar to racial and gender justice issues, have been challenged by certain religious texts and faith issues. Even our "sodomy" laws derive their name from the ancient Biblical story of Sodom. An understanding of the historical/critical context for these texts is useful to understanding our current debates, and can bring surprisingly progressive messages of hospitality and acceptance! Ellen will share her personal perspectives from extensive research and work in this area.

Invite a friend or colleague - the more, the merrier!  Please respond to rosep@ahfi.com by Monday, January 27 to let us know if you are coming. We will meet at the Plaza Club, 20th Floor, 900 Fort Street Mall, on January 30 at Noon. We will have an in-room lunch buffet with salad, soup, sandwich and desert for $22 (tea/drink is another $4-$5). If you are an HWL member, mention that in your RSVP and you will be entered in a drawing for two free lunches for HWL members. If you need to cancel after making an RSVP, please let us know ASAP, before the reservation deadline, so we don't get charged for your meal!
