Hawaii Women Lawyers Luncheon:

Women on Boards and Commissions

Monday, March 28 at Noon

Location: HSBA Conference Room, 1100 Alakea St., Suite 1000, Honolulu

New in 2016: 1 CLE Credit!

Sponsored by Hawaii Women Lawyers and the Hawaii State Bar Association

Please join us on Monday, March 28 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. to discuss strategies for expanding the number and influence of women serving on boards and commissions. Many of our state's most important business is transacted in private board rooms and public commissions, where women remain woefully underrepresented.  Help us address this bias and diversity need by learning how to apply for appointment to boards and commissions, and how to help shape the work they do.  Our speakers will discuss recruitment and appointment for boards and commissions, and key ethical issues involving service on a board or commission, including conflicts of interest, disclosure, state ethics rules, and professional ethics rules.

Speakers:

Lorraine Akiba is a Commissioner for the State of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission. She was formerly the Director of the State Department of Labor & Industrial Relations and Chair of the State Environmental Council.  Her public interest board of directors service is extensive, including HWL, HWLF, HSBA YLD, HMSA, AUW, HICLE, Hawaii Appleseed Public Interest Law Center, and Hawaii Rural Development Council.

Ellen Godbey Carson is a director with Alston Hunt Floyd and Ing. She has served as president of the Board of Directors for the HSBA, HWL, Institute for Human Services, Hale Kipa, Sex Abuse Treatment Center and Central Union Church, and has served on the board of the Office of Disciplinary Counsel and Organ Donor Center of Hawaii.

Lisa M.K. Sakamoto is a financial expert with over 30 years experience in financial planning, corporate finance and executive management.  She has served on numerous board of directors and is currently a board member of Kahala Nui, Iolani School and HMSA (where she previously served as Chair of the Board).  She is also the Diocesan Finance Officer for the Roman Catholic Church in Hawaii, and holds an MBA from New York University, and a BA degree in Business from UH.

Invite a friend or colleague - the more, the merrier!  Please register online no later than Friday, March 25 to let us know you are coming.  Bring a bag lunch or snack; beverages will be provided. And bring some of your business cards for networking, to help introduce yourself to others.Members of Hawaii Women Lawyers who attend are eligible to enter a drawing for 2 free movie tickets!
