Lady Lawyers Luncheon -- Closing the Confidence Gap for Women

Offices of Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing, 1001 Bishop Street, 20th Floor

Monday, April 6, 2015 at Noon

Please join us on Monday, April 6 at Noon to 1:15 p.m., for an inspirational session on Closing the Confidence Gap for Women, led by Hawaii Supreme Court Justice Sabrina McKenna and Sharon Lovejoy, partner and litigator at Starn O'Toole Marcus & Fisher. Learn key tips on how to enhance your confidence and self-esteem, and join us as we discuss simple ways to express your confidence to the benefit of your career.

This program responds to recent national news showing evidence that confidence matters as much as competence to success and that women face a vast confidence gap compared to men.  In studies, though the performance of men and women did not differ in quality, men overestimated their abilities and performance while women underestimated both. This can lead to unfair disparities in job opportunities, reputation and income. With work, however, we can build our own confidence and help close this confidence gap.

  • Justice Sabrina McKenna has served on the Hawaii Supreme Court since 2011. She a 1978 graduate of UH at Manoa, which she attended on a basketball scholarship as one of the first beneficiaries of Title IX, and is a 1982 graduate of WSRSL, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.  After law school, she was a civil litigator at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel, General Counsel to Otaka, Inc., Assistant Professor at WSRSL,  a judge of the District Court of the First Circuit, and a judge of the Circuit Court of the First Circuit, where she presided over criminal, domestic violence, and civil calendars, and served as Senior Judge of the Family Court. She has served on various committees addressing equality and access issues, and has received the University of Hawaii Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Hawaii Women Lawyers Outstanding Judicial Achievement Award.
