Ms. Nakakuni was appointed Hawaii's first female U.S. attorney by President Obama on September 30, 2009, and has been with the United States Attorney’s Office in Hawaii for 27 years, the last four as United States Attorney.  A graduate of the University of Hawaii and the William S. Richardson School of Law, she began her legal career as a law clerk to the late Justice Thomas S. Ogata of the Hawaii Supreme Court.  She then worked for one of her law professors at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.  Ms. Nakakuni returned to Hawaii for an assistant counsel position at the Naval Supply Center in Pearl Harbor, then became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Hawaii in 1985, later serving as an OCDETF (Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force) attorney, strike force chief and the chief of the Drug and Organized Crime Section.  Ms. Nakakuni has tried drug, organized crime and complex fraud cases, and has received many awards for her service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, the Hawaii Women Lawyers and the Department of Justice.
