"Judge 'by the Day'":

Becoming and Being a Per Diem Judge

"Per diems," as they are sometimes known, are part-time judges appointed by the Chief Justice on an as-needed basis to preside in district or family court.  Sitting as a per diem judge is gratifying in its own right and also can be a great step toward becoming a full-time judge or augment a career in private practice.   Join us for a discussion with District Court Per Diem Judges Rebecca Copeland and Michelle Comeau, who will share their experiences applying for their positions and the challenges and rewards they face on the bench.

When:  May 17, 2018, noon-1

Where:  Ashford & Wriston, First Hawaiian Center, 17th Fl. Conf. Rm.

Please feel free to bring your own lunch and drink.

Rebecca is a per diem judge and a solo attorney practicing exclusively in the area of appeals.  She is the founder and former chair of the HSBA’s Appellate Section, and is currently serving her third term on the HSBA Board of Directors.  She is a member of the Judiciary’s Commission on Professionalism, Co-Chair of the Judiciary's Committee on Equality and Access to the Courts, a member of the HSBA's Committee on Diversity Equality and the Law, a member of the Access to Justice Commission's Committee on Increasing Pro Bono Legal Services, and is the Appellate Section's Liaison to the Hawaii Appellate Pro Bono Program.

Michelle Comeau is a per diem judge for the District Court of the First Circuit.  Prior to becoming a per diem judge, she was a litigation attorney at Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing, with a state and federal practice focusing on class actions, business torts, and contract litigation.  Michelle previously practiced law in Los Angeles with Morrison & Foerster LLP and clerked for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.
