Becoming a Judge: a Talk with Governor David Ige

HWL's ongoing series on becoming a judge continues with a special event featuring Governor David Ige. 

As you may have noticed, remarkably few women in the state applied for recent judicial vacancies.  More openings for circuit-court judges are expected in the coming year, and qualified women must apply and re-apply if gender equity on the bench is to be achieved.  As Governor Ige has expressed, more female applicants help to ensure that the Hawai'i Judiciary accurately reflects our community.  

We are excited and honored to have Governor Ige discuss what qualities he believes an applicant for judicial office should possess and how someone might prepare for the process of becoming a judge.

This series was developed in response to a May, 2014 survey conducted by HWL on the topic of becoming a judge, and has featured such notable speakers as Hawai'i Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald; female judges, including Hawai'i Supreme Court Justice Sabrina McKenna; former Chair of the Senate's Judiciary and Labor Committee, Senator Clayton Hee; members of the Judicial Selection Commission; and more.  HWL recognizes the great importance of diversity on the bench and encourages its members to apply and reapply for judgeships.
