Conflict is a natural aspect of human life and at the heart of every court case. Throughout the world, justice systems have developed different ways of dealing with conflict and wrongdoing. In the United States, we mainly use civil and a criminal legal systems. However, restorative justice, used by many indigenous cultures and by Westerners in ancient times, can also be used to address wrongdoing. Our speakers will discuss restorative justice programs in Hawai`i, the use of restorative justice in the federal prison system, and restorative justice in alternative dispute resolution.

The Honorable Leslie E. Kobayashi, was confirmed as a United States District Judge in the District of Hawai`i on December 22, 2010. Prior to confirmation, Judge Kobayashi was a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Hawai`i. Judge Kobayashi was also a practicing lawyer, first serving as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the City and County of Honolulu, followed by private practice, where she was a trial attorney and managing partner. Judge Kobayashi currently serves on the Ninth Circuit Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and Education Committee. She is the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Judicial Achievement Award from Hawai`i Women Lawyers.
Lorenn Walker, JD, MPH, is a health educator and restorative justice lawyer. Lorenn uses public health, including restorative and solution-focused approaches, to address injustice, crime and trauma. Lorenn works with individuals, courts, prisons, police, schools, and non-profits. Lorenn has taught at the University of Hawai`i since 1994, and directs Hawai`i Friends of Restorative Justice. Lorenn also reviews articles for academic journals and has authored over 60 publications.
Cecelia Chang, JD, is the Director for the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution, State of Hawai`i. She has experience in criminal prosecution and civil litigation. Cecilia earned he law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law in 1985. She is a Director of the Hawai`i State Bar association, a member of the Hawai`i Supreme Court Committee on Equality and Access to the Courts, a Director of the native Hawaiian Bar Association, and was previously a Director of Hawai`i Women Lawyers.
