Parents who are raising children know the challenges: Juggling child care and sick days, suffering guilt trips, fighting pregnancy discrimination and "mommy track" bias, all while simply trying to be a good parent and good employee. And now many of us are in the "sandwich generation," raising children while also caring for elderly family members.

Bias, discrimination and lack of accommodation for employees who are pregnant, parenting or caregivers can be outright illegal. These problems disproportionately impact women's income, respect and career advancement.

Learn about current state and federal laws addressing these issues, new legislative initiatives for greater protections, and the status of the growing movement for paid family leave. These concerns have a long history in the women's rights movement, but have we really come a long way? There is still much to be done to create workplace flexibility that can assist all employees, especially parents and caregivers.

Learn ten key strategies for implementing flexible workplaces that are being utilized by many Hawaii employers, including four Hawaii companies that recently received a national workplace flexibility award. What strategies can your workplace adopt to encourage retention and support for employees who are parents and caregivers? Come join us for a lively discussion of these parenting challenges and how to make your workplace more flexible and supportive for employees who are parents and caregivers.

Cathy Betts was appointed in 2011 as the Executive Director of the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women. While there, she has directed legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of women and girls in Hawaii, including efforts to enhance Title IX compliance, enhance systems' response to domestic violence and sexual assault, and advance economic justice issues for working families. She is a 2006 graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law and a 1999 graduate of UCLA. She serves as a director on the board of directors for Hawaii Women Lawyers and Hawaii Filipino Lawyers Association, and also serves as Chair of the HSBA Diversity, Equality and the Law (DEAL) Committee.

Patricia Mau-Shimizu has been Executive Director of the Hawaii State Bar Association since 2011. As a career government attorney and administrator, PMS retired from the Hawaii State House of Representatives in November of 2011 after close to 30 years of service. She began her tenure with the State House as an attorney and later as the Director of the House Majority Staff Office, and was later appointed the House Speaker and confirmed by House members as the Chief Clerk of the House. As the House Clerk PMS was responsible for the filing, recordation and disposition of all official legislative documents such as bills and committee reports, and all administrative operations including personnel, fiscal management, IT systems and equipment, print shop operations and public document management.

Melissa Pavlicek is the president of Hawaii Public Policy Advocates, LLC, an association management and government relations consulting company. HPPA serves as the executive director for non-profit organizations, including the Society for Human Resource Management Hawaii chapter, which has more than 800 members in Hawaii. She is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law, and a prior president of Hawaii Women Lawyers.

Ellen Godbey Carson (moderator) is a director with Alston Hunt Floyd and Ing, and is a former President of Hawaii Women Lawyers and the Hawaii State Bar Association.
