Lady Lawyers Luncheon -- Sexual Assault on College Campuses: A Tragic Epidemic

  • June 25, 2014
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
  • Plaza Club, 20th Floor, 900 Fort Street Mall
Did you read Time magazine's recent cover story, "Rape:  The Crisis in Higher Education"?  Time reports that "the truth is, for young women, America's campuses are dangerous places"; "an estimated 90% of college rapes are committed by just 3% of college men who are repeat offenders."  Worse, the perpetrators are rarely prosecuted and students and their families are often not aware of the dangers until too late.  The University of Hawai'i at Manoa and over fifty other colleges are currently under federal scrutiny for possible Title IX violations for sexual assault problems on campuses.

Please join us for this important presentation to help address this problem.  Jennifer Rose is the Gender Equity Specialist at UH and since 2004, has taught the Family Law Clinic at the William S. Richardson School of Law, where she focuses on domestic violence and civil issues. Jenn will update us on campus sexual assault issues, with a focus on a college’s duties for preventing and acting on sexual assault under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. She will discuss strategies for addressing this epidemic on our college campuses.  If your daughter or friend is at college or planning for college, this information could save her life and sanity.  This effort will not succeed if we just leave it to the colleges to protect women; that strategy has been tried for decades and failed.  There is much we can do to understand these risks, prevent assaults and be effective advocates for safer campuses.

Join us on Wednesday, June 25 at Noon.  Invite a friend or colleague - the more, the merrier! Please respond to rosep@ahfi.com by Friday, June 20 if possible, to let us know you are coming. We will meet at the Plaza Club, 20th Floor, 900 Fort Street Mall.  The in-room lunch buffet with salad, soup, sandwich and desert costs $22 (tea/drink is another $4-$5).  If you are an HWL member, mention that in your RSVP and you will be entered in a drawing for two free lunches for HWL members.  If you need to cancel an RSVP, please do so ASAP, before the stated deadline, so we don't get charged for your meal!
